3rd MONDIALOGO SCHOOL CONTEST

Secondary schools around the world have until 1 November 2007 to register for the 3rd Mondialogo School Contest (2007-2008).

Over 2,500 teams from all five continents are expected to participate.
As part of the launch, schools in 40 countries will organize a “Mondialogo Day” to present their projects and plans for the 2007-2008 contest.

Participating schools are matched with a partner team from another country to prepare joint creative projects illustrating a DIALOGUE BETWEEN THEIR TWO CULTURES.

Launched to coincide with the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development (21 May),the contest puts into practice the principles of cultural diversity and pluralism. According to UNESCO’s Director-General, these should be integrated into national policies, in particular those relating to education.

Teaching staff may register at
their school students aged between 14 and 18 years to take part in the largest global school contest until 1st November 2007. Following previous events in 2003/2004 and 2005/2006, the contest is now being held for the third time.

After registration, a draw is held to match participating schools with a partner team from another country or continent. The two teams then make contact with each other, agree on a joint project topic and work onthis in a process of continuous exchange.
The resulting dialogue between the cultures leads to the emergence of a joint creative project. This may be a piece of music, a play, a collage, a photographic documentation, a sculpture, Internet pages – there are no limits to the imagination.

In 2008, students and teachers from particularly committed schools will be taking part in the internationalMondialogo Symposium, where the partner teams will meet each other in person. After several days of workshops and joint activities, the three best
partner teams will be awarded sums of 500, 1,000 and 1,500 euros as part of a festive prize-giving ceremony.

Some 25,000 school students from 126 countries took part in the first Mondialogo School Contest in 2003/2004, instantly making it the largest worldwide contest for school students. The second contest in 2005/2006 exceeded even this figure, with more than 35,000 school students from 138 countries taking part.

The Mondialogo School Contest is a constituent part of the Mondialogo –Intercultural Dialogue and Exchange initiative, which was launched in October 2003 by UNESCO and DaimlerChrysler.

Tomorrow in South Africa women are encouraged to "enjoy their femininity" and celebrate National Cleavage Day. Seriously. The event is sponsored by..drum roll.. Wonderbra, and it goes with a "socially-relevant" pitch:

Rejoice in your femininity, have fun with Wonderbra and celebrate being a woman on National Cleavage Day! In the morning from 7-9am gorgeous Wonderbra girls can be spotted in the traffic in BMW’s & Harley Davidson’s, and that evening at Franki Bananaz and Billy the Bums in Durban and Johannesburg, and at Sobar and Rooseveldt in Cape Town. All proceeds will be donated to The Sunflower Fund, which raises awareness and funds for the SA Bone Marrow registry. So, while you party up a storm at a Wonderbra National Cleavage Day Party you can also affect people’s lives!

This sounds more like a pathetic pitch to sell breasts-enhancing brassiere rather than raise awareness for bone marrow registry. My advice to Wonderbra is that they try to raise awareness first among themselves on how not to objectify women.

A brassiere is seen to symbolise the repression of women's bodies. If indeed you want to feel free and unrestrained, you simply don't wear one. If they really want to celebrate femininity (and even freedom), they need to look at how UP does the Oblation run, female-version, au naturelle, without cleavage by Wonderbra.

It is also interesting to note that this event is celebrated in South Africa every year to "celebrate and rejoice women's femininity," the same country where rape statistics are so high it's unbelievable (one is raped every 26 seconds.) How can one rejoice in her being a woman in a society where mere possession of breasts and a vagina makes one a target.

We live in a world where a woman's beauty is judged by the color of her skin, the smallness of her waist, and yes, the size of her breasts. This is a society where people, through relentless advertising, are encouraged to want and buy more. And they'll tell you it's alright to give in by cleverly icing the real intent under the guise of social responsibility. While you party up a storm at a Wonderbra National Cleavage Day Party you can also affect people’s lives!

It's making me sick.

Today is International Women's Day!

Organised by World Vision, this event aims to raise awareness on the plight of hungry children all over the world. Ultimately, its goal is to end child hunger by 2015.

The global event is scheduled on Sunday, the 21st of May.

I'll be walking with friends and strangers here in Johannesburg but I hope my friends in the Philippines would walk with me in support of this cause.

Unfortunately, I've accessed the Philippine website of WV, but they don't have postings yet. The WV website here in SA provides more info.

I just got home from a whole day stint at Gateway for the film fest. I guess this is one of the best pre-bday celebration I ever had. And I have to thank CEAE for the opportunity they gave me to help them even in a very small way. The staff and my co-volunteers are really awesome tenku tenku :)

Please, please if you haven't seen or heard MFF, try to visit Gateway tonight until Sunday, 21 August. There are a lot of great films out there and I had the chance to watch two, Legacy: Philippine World Herritage Sites by noted director Butch Nolasco and Children of the Mountains by Jukka Holapainen, the president of CEAE.

Legacy features the journey of famed conservation advocate Augusto Villalon to UNESCO heritage sites in the Philippines. It is an exhilarating journey that will take you to the depths of the Tubbataha Reef Marine Park, the St. Paul Subterranean River at Puerto Princesa, the historic landmark in the North that is Vigan, the majestic Rice Terraces, and ends at the four Baroque churches that reflect Filipino culture and faith. Children of the Mountains tells the sad plight of the Dumagats who once lived abundantly, peacefully co-existing with wild flora and fauna the way their deities created them to be. They were once a dignified tribe who did not depend on anyone for their survival until the roads, chainsaws, and bulldozers came. Now, the Dumagats allowed themselves to be enslaved by the so-called civilized people to earn their living because the greedy corporations (who are in collusion with people from the government) took everything away from them: their dignity, their culture, even their lives.

These are films stripped off with glamour and big-named stars. These are real films depicting real people and real problems. I guess we shouldn't deny our children, especially ourselves, of this rare chance to breathe reality even for just a few hours.
Happy weekend.

This was the longest 7 hours of my life. I can barely smile.

The "yummy" calamansi juice according to Neil G. Great timing indeed, I stood there and froze while he had his "tea break".

The crowd outside Fully Booked. The line was really long it turned and twisted until the parking lot outside the Promenade.

Dinner after the sacrifice at Teriyaki Boy. We had Kani Salad (Bento Box's KS is way better), tamago sashimi, Chicken teriyaki, and Ebi tempura, and thirst-quenching lipton iced tea.

I'm not yet a Gaiman fan, but he scored a thousand pogi points for his patience for bearing with emotional, giggling, blabbering people. The ladies were all over him (most of them), asking to hug or even kiss him, I can tell his hand was numb from signing tons of books that day and the other night, still, that unwavering smile and coolness. Neil, you are really loved here! :)

Before signing, he read excerpts from Anansi Boys (taken by hny while I was at the back of the building)

I heard that the crowd for the book signing yesterday at Gateway started to build-up as early as 8.30 am. Signing began at 4.00 pm. They said it reached three floors. People are crazy, including me I guess. =)

On July 6, 2005, eight of the world's most powerful leaders will convene in Edinburgh and decide on the fate of millions who are dying from hunger.
People from all over the world are expected to troop to UK and welcome the G8 with banners and white bands calling for the cancellation of debts of underdeveloped nations, delivery of more and better aid, and changing of unfair trade rules and practices.
Let us show our support for this worthy cause and join the millions who are taking action in making poverty history.

On a lighter note, happy birthday to my lola. I love you, 'la and thank you so much for everything :)

it's December once again and i can imagine the horde of people going to divisoria to buy gifts for their inaanaks (godchildren). It's December once again and I can imagine the calories and fats lodging in my stomach and thighs because of binge eating. December is also a month of parties and endless reunions and being a self confessed introvert i ended saying no to a lot of invitations. Grabe one day all my friends will leave me, i am soo "unfriendly" haha.

I really have a lot of plans this december. I plan to open a savings account, a real savings account that is. The one where i'll put my so called savings after a binge of impulse buying. I also plan to watch Noel cabangon again at the 70s bistro and the stonefree band wherever their gig will be. I plan to attend a get together organized by my highschool friends, see im not that unfriendly, i really include them on my plans =)

and lastly I plan to do all my plans. I really hope the universe will conspire for me to attain my plans. whatever. happy holidays!!
